The First Time I Tried Honeydew Melon

I ate my first honeydew when I moved to California and it rocked my world. Its flavor is unbelievably sweet and its texture soft and juicy, and I knew I wanted to make agua fresca with it immediately.

If you live in the United States, you've definitely seen it in grocery stores. If you're in Mexico, you might not have encountered it yet, though it's slowly making its way south. If you spot one, you absolutely have to try it.

Unlike cantaloupe, which has a stronger, more pronounced flavor, honeydew is subtle and refreshing with a floral note that makes it perfect for drinks.

How to Choose a Good Honeydew Melon

Sometimes it's tricky to know when this melon is ripe. Here are my tips:

  • Aroma: Smell it where the stem used to be. It should have a sweet, floral scent, though it will be subtle.
  • Color: Look for a creamy yellowish color. If it's still very green, it's not ready yet.
  • Texture: It should give slightly when you press it gently, but it shouldn't be soft or mushy.

If you can't find a ripe one, buy it green and take it home to ripen for a few days. When you start noticing its floral aroma you will know is ready to eat as is or to blend to make this delicious drink.

How to Make Honeydew Melon Agua Fresca Step by Step

  1. Wash and dry the melon thoroughly
  2. Cut it in half and use a spoon to remove all the seeds (save them to make melon seed agua fresca if you'd like!)
  3. Peel the melon and scoop the flesh into your blender
  4. Blend the flesh with sugar and water
  5. Serve over plenty of ice

Silvia's Tips

  • Always taste the fruit before adding sugar, honeydew is so sweet that it may need just a little bit. 
  • Give it a good stir with a spoon before serving because fruit agua fresca tend to separate when they sit for a while
  • For an ultra-smooth agua fresca, blend really well until everything is perfectly integrated

Variations

Here are some ideas to make it your own:

  • Add a citrus twist: A splash of lime juice enhances the melon's natural sweetness beautifully.
  • Try a pinch of salt: Salt also gives the natural sweetness a little boost.
  • Mix with other fruits: Blend in a small piece of cucumber for an even more refreshing drink, just don't use too much because we want the honeydew to be the star.

Storage Instructions

This agua fresca should be kept refrigerated at all times. If you have leftovers after serving, store it covered in a pitcher or transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 2 days.

Before serving again, stir well to mix everything back together.

You can also freeze it in ice cube trays and use the cubes to add a fragrant touch to your water. Or blend the frozen cubes in a food processor to make honeydew shaved ice, ¡so refreshing!

Ingredients

  • 1 ripe honeydew melon
  • ½ cup sugar or sweetener of choice
  • 2-3 fresh spearmint sprigs
  • 8 cups cold water
  • Ice optional

Prepare the Melon

  • Wash the melon thoroughly, dry it, and place it on your cutting board.
  • Carefully cut the melon in half and remove all the seeds with a spoon.
  • Using your knife, peel each half to remove all the flesh.

Blend the Fruit

  • Add the chopped melon flesh, sugar, and 3-4 cups of water to your blender. Blend until everything is perfectly smooth.
  • The sweetness level depends on your personal taste. Since honeydew is naturally very sweet, I suggest tasting it before adding more sugar.
  • You can also use other sweeteners like honey, agave syrup, stevia, or whatever you prefer.
  • Transfer to a large pitcher, add the remaining water, stir well, and adjust sweetness if needed.

Chill and Serve

  • I recommend refrigerating until ready to serve. But if you want to drink it immediately, serve it over plenty of ice.
  • Garnish with a fresh spearmint sprig or a small piece of melon on the rim of the glass.
