Thanks to the great folks at Butterball for making this recipe post possible. As always, my comments, opinions, and love for summer grilling are my own.

Grilling has always been a big part of my family's life. For us, every season is grilling season. But the summer grilling season definitely means there's more grilling going on in the neighborhood.

Last weekend I had to laugh, when, at an end-of-the-school-year event, I turned my head and saw another Mexican family doing exactly the same thing I was. They were adding guacamole to the top of their burgers. Guacamole topped burgers are so common in Mexico that I remember how surprised I was that everyone didn't do it here when I first moved to California with my husband.

Since that burger last weekend was so good, I thought this would be a great time to share a classic Mexican burger recipe.

This recipe includes three of our favorite ingredients, turkey, chipotle chiles, and guacamole. All are classic favorites in Mexico. As for our family, we have many classic turkey recipes: These turkey burgers and turkey with mole quickly come to mind. In fact, you could definitely identify us as turketarians. We love turkey all year round and feel like it's a healthier choice that's still protein packed. Chipotle chiles, for their part, bring their unique smokey spice to the mix. And, as I've already mentioned, homemade guacamole on top makes it really taste like home. Enjoy! I know you will. Here's the recipe.

For the Chipotle Ketchup

  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1/3 cup sweet onion, chopped
  • 1 garlic clove, chopped
  • 1 cup tomato ketchup
  • 2-3 chipotle peppers in adobo

Start with the chipotle ketchup. Heat olive oil and sauté onion and garlic until soft. In a food processor mix onion, garlic, ketchup and chipotle peppers until slightly chunky. Set aside. You can prepare the sauce one day in advance if you like, just store it in a sealed container in the fridge.

Get your grill going. For us, the process takes 15-20 minutes to get our coals to the desired temperature. While waiting, prepare the guacamole. Here are the ingredients and directions.

When your grill is ready, take the Butterball turkey patties out of the freezer, brush both sides of each patty with olive oil and place on the grill. Cook burgers about 8 minutes on one side, and 7 minutes on the other, until the internal temperature of each burger reaches 165 degrees F.

Heat turkey bacon according to the instructions on the package, it takes less than a minute.

Toast hamburger buns if you like, we always do. Start with a layer of dijon mustard, then lettuce, a turkey patty, chipotle ketchup, turkey bacon, and finish with a very generous serving of guacamole.

Serve with sweet potato fries or plantain fries and fruit on the side.
