Mexican Watermelon Cooler Recipe

Jump to RecipeEspañol

My family have been drinking this Mexican watermelon cooler for generations, long before it became fashionable. Watermelon season is here, so be sure to enjoy our recipe for our family's refreshing, non-alcoholic, traditional agua fresca.

glass of watermelon cooler or watermelon agua fresca

Right now, I see green, white and red everywhere I go. We absolutely love freshly cut watermelon slices, but we also love preparing agua de sandía, our own Mexican watermelon cooler, to serve as a light beverage on warm spring and summer days.

If you're traveling in Mexico, sometimes it's called a preparado, especially in restaurants, so if you see preparado de sandía, you'll know what it means.

It is ridiculously easy to make. You just need a few ingredients and 10 minutes for a thirst quenching beverage.

Food storage tip: Put the watermelon in the fridge as soon as you buy it. So it will be really cold when you prepare the agua fresca.

I recommend putting the watermelon in the fridge ahead of time, so it is very cold.

Pour one cup of water in a pot over medium heat. Add the sugar and mix until well dissolved, set aside and let cool down.

Place the watermelon cubes and three cups of water in a blender and mix very well (depending on the size of your blender, you may need to do this two times).

Add the sugar water and lime juice. Mix well.

Divide the blended watermelon and sugar water into 2 two-liters (~2 qt each) pitchers, add the other 4 cups of water (2 per pitcher). If you have a big container (4 quarts) even better. Cool down in the fridge and serve super cold or on ice.

I told you, it's very easy!
