Soccer Snacks

Soccer season is back.  This year the games are longer, and we have an extra practice during the week.  It is still very hot here, and some games are in the middle of the day, which is hard on the kids, not to mention the parents.

Kid stretching before soccer game

A couple of weeks ago,  I was wondering what foods my son should eat before, during, and after the game.

Every Saturday, one mom brings snacks for the players. Every week is different, and usually, they bring healthy food.  Even still, for two consecutive weeks, my son complained of stomachaches on the ride home.

I wondered what was going on.  I went to investigate, and I discovered some interesting things. Often, my son is getting the right kinds of food, but he's eating them at the wrong time!

After reading and reading,  I would like to share with you today some of what I found out. I hope you find it useful.

Soccer Snacks Ideas

Before the Game

Kids should have a regular size meal at least one hour before the game.  Recommended foods are low-fat carbohydrates like:

  • Pasta
  • Cereal
  • Sandwiches
  • Vegetables

Drink: Water

During the Game – Half Time

  • Bananas
  • Oranges
  • Watermelon
  • Grapes
  • Strawberries

Drink: Water

After the Game

  • Low-fat string cheese with whole wheat crackers
  • Low-fat yogurt with granola
  • Apple sauce
  • Half bagel with low-fat cream cheese and jam
  • Half a sandwich (ham, turkey, or cheese)

Drink: Water or low-fat chocolate milk

Other interesting information

Sports Drinks: please read the labels. Some sport drinks are not as healthy as they appear.  Some of them come loaded with colorings, high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), and other sugars.

Fruit juices and cocktails: Some of these beverages don't bring the right hydration after physical exertion. Water is always best.

Coaches and nutritionists seem to agree about offering low-fat snacks. Chips, french fries, muffins, and burgers are not appropriate after an exhausting soccer game.

After reading all this, I realized my son's stomachache was a combination of bad timing and the wrong snack, I was giving him after-game snacks at halftime.

Now I know better. No more stomachaches after the game!
