Breakfast To Go

I’ve mentioned it here many times, we have a policy of not skipping breakfast. We’ve all heard about the many benefits of starting the day out well with a good breakfast. I’ve shared recipes for breakfast when you have all the time in the world as well as for breakfast when you have just a few minutes. But life is life, and sometimes things happen.

Here’s what happened at my house yesterday, see if this doesn’t sound familiar. Tuesdays are very busy days for us. The boys have activities after school and scouts in the evening. But yesterday was full of small happenings that caused us to change our routine and made me feel like I didn’t have a moment to rest all day.

Work, school, unexpected circumstances– to make a long story short, we finally arrived home at nearly nine o’clock, which is pretty late for us, especially on a school night. We just checked out the book bags, put on the pajamas, and sent the kids off to bed (an hour and a half after their normal bedtime).

Since I had had so many extra things to take care of, I needed to work into the night, which I don’t like to do, but it’s sometimes necessary. The next thing I know, my husband is announcing, “It’s 7:45 family!” (We overslept!) I jumped out of bed and ran to check on the boys and help them get dressed. Meanwhile, my husband organized backpacks and started getting the fixings out to prepare their lunches. We looked at the clock, we looked at each other, it was already time to go. “What are we going to do for breakfast?” We didn’t even have time for a smoothie or a bowl of cereal. This was definitely a morning unlike any we’ve had in a long time.

While I slapped their lunch sandwiches together, my husband gave them each a quick glass of milk while they put on their shoes. I ran to the pantry and grabbed two packages of Honey Bunches of Oats Breakfast Biscuits and gave one to each kid. They took their first bites as they ran to the car.

Yep! Today was one of those breakfast on the run days! I’m happy to tell you my boys arrived at school just on time and with food in their stomachs.

So here is my message for the day. Prepare for crazy mornings. They happen. Have foods in the pantry to offer your family even on those crazy days, there’s no excuse for skipping breakfast, not even oversleeping.
