Drive for a Pledge

This is a compensated campaign in collaboration with AT&T and Latina Bloggers Connect. As always my opinions, comments, and promise not to text and drive are my own.

You’ve probably heard by now about my family’s own close call with a texting driver. It still leaves me a little dumbfounded to know she was so distracted she still has no idea how close she came to running over my boys. Thankfully, nothing did happen, but the incident did make me want to participate in helping get the word out about the #ItCanWait campaign.

And in case there is any question about it, over 100,000 accidents a year involving texting while driving is not a problem, it’s an epidemic. So now more than ever, their calling on folks like you and me to join in and help raise awareness of the dangers of texting and driving. We really want to make texting-while-driving as unacceptable as drinking and driving.

And progress is being made. In September 2012, awareness of the It Can Wait message increased by 26% during the period of the first ever “National No Text on Board Day.” And one-in-three said during that time that texting-while-driving messages have an impact on their driving habits.

AT&T wants to save lives and since the It Can Wait movement was launched back in 2009, more than 2 million no-texting-while-driving pledges have been logged through, other social sites like Facebook, and at special events. Plus, the free AT&T DriveMode app for BlackBerry and Android users has had more than 300,000 unique downloads.

All summer long, the “100 Reasons It Can Wait” campaign was waged from Memorial Day to Labor Day because these are considered the 100 deadliest days for teen drivers.

All these activities have been leading up to today, Sept 19, and a Drive For Pledges to make a special push to keep the conversation going by reaching out to the community.

If you haven’t already done so and you would like to participate, it’s easy:

  • Share your pledge on Twitter #itcanwait and Facebook.
