Summer is almost over! But there’s still time to get together over a delicious snack and enjoy a little playtime with the kids while creating one more simple, fun and yummy craft with them.

Mexican Independence Day is September 16th, that’s just a little more than a couple of weeks away, and this project gave me the perfect opportunity to slip in a little cultural enrichment and tell my boys all about Miguel Hidalgo and his shouting, “Viva México,” from the church steps in Dolores Hidalgo. They were having so much fun, they had no idea they were getting a history lesson, too.

We munched on Teddy Grahams and sipped milk while decorating them, which energized the kids right out of the mid-afternoon doldrums and gave me a little extra stamina as we practiced that famous grito, “Viva México!” It was wonderful just spending time with them, snacking, having fun and giggling.

Here’s what we used:

1. Teddy Grahams. The key ingredient and inspiration for the project. I had no idea there were so many different kinds! I used apple, chocolate, honey, and cinnamon. But I think we ate all the chocolate before we got a chance to use them.

2. Gummy Loops.

3. Gum drops.

4. Sour candy strips.

5. Marshmallow spread (to “glue” all the pieces together)

We used the gummy loops and drops to make the hats and the candy strips to make the sarapes and the rest. The marshmallow spread can be used very sparingly to attach things to the Teddy Grahams and to each other. Just use your imagination, the hardest part is keeping from eating them long enough to get a photo.

Every year we have friends over for Sept 16th and we plan to make these Mexican Independence Day Teddy Graham treats again with the kids and their friends.

Enjoy!
