Giving the things we value most first priority, both in our minds and on our calendars, is a challenge we face daily. (So many distractions, right?) And then trying to keep all these values in balance is even more challenging.
The truth is we rarely have balance in our home and when we do, it doesn’t last long. By this I mean we may meet the goal of home-cooked meals, while we miss the goal of getting outdoors to exercise, which is something we also value a lot. So we keep trying.
The home-cooked meals we’ve given special emphasis to, so we are doing pretty well with that. Of course, more of each day is spent planning, buying ingredients, preparing and feeding the family because of it. We go to the farmer’s market every week and try to use the freshest, healthiest ingredients possible. We work on trying to balance each meal by including plenty of beans, vegetables and some fruit. But all this takes time, which means we need to give up some rather fun, but lower priority, activities in order to keep the balance.
We love walking, playing, hiking, swimming, and just being outdoors. Between the two, however, the home-cooked meals and the staying active outdoors, staying active has been much more difficult for us to achieve. Suffice it to say, a balanced healthy lifestyle is still a journey for us and we’ll keep trying.
