Music to My Ears, “Mama Can I Read a Book?”

Para español da click aquí.

The new school year is just around the corner and today I have a great tip that has helped my kids to read more.  If you are looking for something to stimulate your kids’ love of reading, I hope this will work for you, too.

A couple of weeks ago I was introduced to Storia, a new e-reading app by Scholastic that both encourages children to read and helps parents track their kids’ reading progress.

My kids absolutely love it! My elder boy took the iPad from my hands, sat down, and read for 45 minutes the first time!! Fantastic.

The app is free and you can get it directly from  When you download it to your device (it is available for Windows, iPad, and soon on Android Tablets) you get 5 free books.  Here are some of the things you can do with it:

  • Open a bookshelf for each of your children.
  • Change the bookshelf’s background to fit each kid’s personality.
  • Buy scholastic e-books at and add them to the app
  • Follow your kids’ reading progress: the number of pages each reads, how many words they check in the dictionary (included in the App), and how long each child spends reading.

Some books have interactive activities like scrambled sentences, drawing boards, and more.  Kids can also highlight words or phrases and check words they don’t know in the dictionary. When they click on the word the app shows the definition and pronounces it.  My kids love using the app and I love seeing them read.

Enjoy reading!
