My Kids’ Bedroom Makeover

This year my family and I are working really hard to get organized and make our spaces more beautiful and functional.  A few days ago I told you about an invitation I received at just the perfect moment.

Lowe's Home Improvement Store invited me to be a Creative Ideas Ambassador and it is helping tremendously toward our goal.  Today, I'll show you my first assignment and you will get the opportunity to participate for a chance to win a very cool giveaway that just could help you start your own projects, too.  Ready?

Lowe's gave us a gift card to use for supplies to work on one room in our house.  Deciding which room was tough since so many rooms in our house need a makeover. In the end, my husband and I decided to work on our children's bedroom.  Here was the reasoning:

  • Since buying the house (10 years ago), the room had been sporting a bright green color that wasn't our favorite.
  • Our kids shared the room and it was crowded, with one bed (full size), a train table, two dressers, toys and a bookcase, they didn't have space to play.
  • The closet was full of old clothes, mom's and dad's boxes (even my wedding dress!), and other things, so the kids didn't have enough space to store their own things.
  • And last, but not least, we wanted to provide our kids with a bright, organized room, where every toy and piece of clothing had a place to live, and where they could do the followingget dressed, sleep, play, and work on their art projects.

We checked out the Creative Ideas Facebook page, the Creative Ideas website, downloaded the Creative Ideas Magazine App and visited Lowe's 3 or 4 times to get new paint, select organizing bins, and find various other items. Lowe's provided what we needed and gave us that last push to get our hands working and our lives organized, and I'm feeling very happy with the results.

So here they are! My before and after pictures,  I would love to know your thoughts:

This is the room before. As you can see, it was bright green, we had a dresser, train table, and bookcase with just enough space to walk around the bed.  Not visible in this photo, a second dresser and an easel.  My kids thought it was the perfect time to choose a new theme, too.

The same space, with a soothing light blue color on the walls now (see photos below for a better sense of the blue) that goes great with the new Mario Kart comforter and the decals (completely removable) my kids chose. We moved the bed to this corner, and there was enough space to add the toy box at the end of the bed!  We used an Olympic Zero VOC paint from Lowe's with a color called Ocean Breeze on top of a thick layer of primer (we really needed to hide that bright green!).

This is how one of the closets looked before.  You cannot see it, but as I mentioned my wedding dress was in there, plus a lot of boxes on the floor and clothes my kids didn't use, even a hanging diaper bag!

And after.  Big change, right?  The kids' clothes were moved to the closet just to the left of this one.  We took the closet doors down and now the kids can easily access their very organized toys, which in turn opened up the floor space in the room.  We love these blue and red crates and the silver and black stacking parts bins we found at Lowe's, they look great with the Mario Kart theme.  The 4 shelf black organizer was a steal and a breeze to assemble:

A closer look at the crates we found at Lowe's, so easy to access and carry around.

This is the other closet before, full of winter clothes that didn't fit my son and a very bad use of space under the shirts.

The closet after. We found this very practical hanging shelf and containers with Mario and Luigi's Colors.  My four year old can access his green bins and my 8 year old is tall enough to reach his blue bins.

Believe it or not, now we can fit both kids' clothes in this closet and the two bulky dressers are out of the room! Also, this photo represents the new color of the wall a little better.

Then my kids said, “Where is Princess Peach's color?”  (Princess Peach, a character from Mario Kart).  So we found the perfect containers at Lowe's which fit nicely under the bed and store all their building blocks and train tracks! We love them!

In this pic you can see where the bed and the second dresser were before, and now there is ample room for a great corner art space and even some open floor, My favorite part of the room!

Now, tell me about you, do you have a room that needs a makeover? A project you would like to get started? Are you feeling overwhelmed because organization is not your forte?
