Disney’s Lady and the Tramp arrives in stores next Tuesday, Feb 7th!

I’m very happy because Lady and the Tramp in particular brings back great memories from my own childhood. We just watched it at our house and my older boy said to me,”Mama, Lady is very sweet and cute,” and that is exactly what I had always thought about her.

The film is adorable, if you remember, it tells the story of Lady, a puppy both sweet and protective of her owners.  She finds herself on the mean streets where Tramp finds her and teaches her how to survive in the rough and tumble streets, very different from the home she is used to.  Bit by bit the two fall in love and they return together to the home where Lady was raised, but not before some adventures.

Lady and the Tramp is a Disney classic, a lovely story, beautifully drawn, with charismatic characters.  In this Diamond Edition, there are many special features to enjoy, too, including:

• Three never-before-seen deleted scenes
• Never-before-heard deleted song
• Second Screen Inside Walt´s Story Meetings
• “The Siamese Cat Song” Finding a Voice for the Cats

I really like two things:  First, all Disney films come with subtitles and audio in Spanish, French, and English.  Second, this particular release has a special video featuring Diane Disney Miller (daughter of Walt Disney) who relates how her father, while making Lady and the Tramp, was also constructing new parts of Disneyland. The video includes scenes of Walt with his family at Disneyland, photographs, and Diane Disney Miller’s description of their family life, her parents’ apartment at Disneyland, how it was decorated, and the special things they collected to furnish it.

Lady and the Tramp will be available in a 3 disc Combo Pack (Blu-ray, DVD, Digital Copy), 2 Disc Combo Pack (Blu-ray, DVD), and 1 Disc DVD, this Tuesday, February 7th, 2012, just in time for Valentine’s Day!

La película de la Dama y el Vagabundo llega a tiendas el próximo 7 de febrero! esto me da mucha alegría ya que me trae muy buenos recuerdos de mi niñez.  Hace unos días la vimos en casa y mi hijo mayor me dijo, “mamá Lady es muy bonita y tierna” y eso específicamente es lo que siempre he pensado de ella.

La película es adorable, si lo recuerdas, nos cuenta la historia de Lady una perrita muy dulce y muy protectora de sus dueños.  Un malentendido la pone en la calle por unos días, donde Tram (el vagabundo) la acoge y le enseña lo que es la vida en la calle (muy diferente a lo que ella estaba acostumbrada), poco a poco estos dos lindos personajes se enamoran y terminan viviendo en la casa de Lady.

Esta película es un clásico de Disney con una bella historia, lindas escenas y carismáticos personajes, y ahora en su Edición Diamante podemos además disfrutar de contenidos especiales como:

A mi particularmente me gustaron dos cosas, que como toda película de Disney viene con subtítulos y audio en español, francés e inglés y uno de los contenidos especiales es un video donde Diane Disney Miller (la hija de Walt Disney) nos cuenta sobre la temporada cuando se estaba produciendo esta película lo cual pasó al mismo tiempo que se construían partes de Disneylandia.  Este video está lleno de escenas de Walt Disney con su familia, en Disneylandia, fotografías y una narrativa muy emotiva de Diane contándonos de su vida familiar, del departamento de sus padres en Disneylandia, de objetos que coleccionaron, etc, verdaderamente una historia para verse.

Spicy Beef and Bean Chili

A couple of days ago I invited you to participate in a Virtual Cooking Class with Chef George Duran entitled Game Day and Slow Cooker Recipes.  Chef Duran gave us a lot of useful information for using slow cookers that today I would like to pass on to you:

• Use canned ingredients for slow cookers.  If you are going to add fresh ingredients, it is important to add them at the very end, if not they will get mushy.
• When cooking with meat, sear it first, the searing caramelizes the outside and makes sure all the juices remain inside.  It adds a lot of flavor to the dish.  Try sauteing beef before adding to the slow cooker.
• Make sure the meat is cooking at at least 165 degrees, so you know the meat is cooking all the way through.
• Slow cookers are one of the best tools to make stock.  Always strain it through a fine sieve, and you’ll have the most delicious, flavorful stock ever.  Throw away whatever’s left over.
• One of the few things that are not recommended to cook in a slow cooker is fish or shrimp as they are very delicate, you can add them however at the very end.  Squid and octopus on the other hand are tougher and need a long time to cook, so they are perfect for slow cookers.
• When choosing a slow cooker, brand does not matter, as long as you are happy with the design, size, and options.  Slow cookers are one of the least expensive culinary tools on the market.
• Robyn from Robyn’s Online World suggested Cook’s Illustrated website for reviews of slow cookers.

Spicy Beef and Bean Chili

Hace un par de días te invité a una fiesta virtual para charlar sobre platillos hechos en ollas de cocimiento lento (slow cookers).  Chef George Durán nos dió varios tips que ahora comparto contigo:

• Usar ingredientes de lata es recomendable.  Si usas ingredientes frescos, lo mejor es que los añadas casi al final.
• Cocer un poco la carne por todos lados para cerrar los jugos dentro de ella es muy buena idea.  Esto le dará mas sabor a tu platillo.
• Asegúrate de cocer la carne completamente, ésta deberá estar al menos a 165 grados F.
• Slow cookers son estupendas para hacer caldos.  Se recomienda colarlos por una coladera fina, lo que quede ahí se puede tirar, todos los nutrientes de lo que hayas usado quedará en el caldo.
• Una de las pocas cosas que no son recomendables para cocer en slow cookers es pescado o mariscos, especialmente camarones, ya que son muy delicados y se cocen muy rápido, contrariamente, pulpo y calamar son mas duros y necesitan de mas cocimiento lo que los hace ideales para slow cookers.
• La marca realmente no importa al escoger slow cookers, lo importante es que te guste el diseño, el tamaño y las opciones.  Slow cookers no son muy caras.
• Robyn de Robyn’s Online World sugirió checar Cook’s Illustrated para leer reseñas y opiniones sobre slow cookers (en inglés).

Odds & Ends

The Village Store is closed and being remodeled until February 16th, so if you need sundry items, Degnan’s Deli (shuttle stop 4) is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. They do carry a few emergency and grocery items: diapers, formula & baby food, breakfast items, soup, sandwiches and chili. A warm fireplace and some seating is available. Restrooms do have changing tables and are ADA accessible.

As of this writing, gas is not available in Yosemite Valley, so fill up before coming…there are stations available at Wawona (Hwy 41) and Crane Flat (Hwy 120), but the El Portal station (Hwy 140) is currently closed. Chains are required to be carried in all vehicles (even if you have 4 wheel drive). Carry warm blankets to keep kids and nursing mom warm while the car is parked if chains need to be put on. Keep an emergency kit in the car & a bag of snacks, dry clothes, a few books, flashlights for each kid, car games and water easily accessible. Sometimes delays on the road can happen, so being prepared with diversions such as glow sticks & stars, organic lollipops, window markers and audio stories downloaded to your phone (try Maestro Classics) can make a forced stop bearable. Keep all food and scented items (like chapstick & lotion) consolidated so it’s easy to bring in to your room or store in a bear locker. Remember kids aren’t as thirsty when its cold, but our higher elevation and dry climate can cause dehydration with symptoms such as headaches and constipation. Keep them drinking by offering juice-boxes, water (it’s delicious here!), cocoa and juicy fruits such as apples and tangerines. Nursing moms, be sure to keep especially hydrated for your baby and yourself. Just in case, the medical clinic located in Yosemite Valley is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.. Check current weather and road conditions at the NPS Yosemite General information number (209-372-0200).

As I write this, my husband came in from getting wood for the fire. “You know what I like about this winter weather?” he asked… “the quiet…it’s so quiet outside!” Enjoy the quiet as you visit. Take time to look for animal prints, listen to the coyote howl, gaze at the splendor of the majestic peaks and stars surrounding this little piece of wilderness heaven…and enjoy!

La Village Store se encuentra cerrada por remodelación hasta el 16 de febrero del 2012, así que si necesitas cosas pequeñas necesitas ir a Degnan’s Deli (parada 4 en el autobús) la cual está abierta de 7 a.m. a 8p.m.  Ellos tienen algunos artículos básicos como pañales, leche para bebés, comida para bebés, alimentos para desayuno, sopas, sandwiches y chili.  Tienen también un lugar para sentarse con chimenea.  Los baños tienen mesas para cambio de pañales y son accesibles para minusválidos.

Al momento en que estaba escribiendo esto hace un par de semanas, no había gasolina en Yosemite Valley, así que te recomiendo que llenes tu tanque antes de llegar, hay gasolineras en Wawona (Hwy 41) y Crane Flat (Hwy 120), la estación El Portal (Hwy 140) se encuentra cerrada. Es necesario que las llantas de tu coche traigan cadenas para nieve (aún si conduces un coche con tracción en las cuatro ruedas).  Trae cobijas para mantener a los niños o a la mamá (en caso de que esté amamantando) cómodos en caso de que necesiten parar para poner la cadenas en el coche.  No olvides traer un kit de primeros auxilios, snacks, ropa seca, algunos libros, juegos para jugar en el coche, agua y lámparas de mano para cada niño.  Es bueno estar preparado en caso de paradas inesperadas, y en este caso mantener a los niños ocupados es imporante, trae juguetes, marcadores para las ventanas, etc, bajar historias en tu teléfono es una buena idea (a nosotros nos gusta Maestro Classics). Mantén comida y productos aromáticos (desodorantes, cremas, shampoo, etc.) en un sólo y accesible lugar, de esta forma será mas fácil y rápido traerlos a tu habitación o ponerlos en los lockers a prueba de osos.

Recuerda que cuando hace frío los niños no tienen tanta sed, pero debido a la altitud y el clima seco hay posibilidades de deshidratación, algunos síntomas son dolores de cabeza, y constipación.  Recuerda ofrecerles regularmente que beber como jugo, agua (la cual es deliciosa aquí), chocolate caliente o frutas jugosas como manzanas o mandarinas. Mamás que están amamantando son particularmente susceptibles a deshidratación.  En caso de necesitar asistencia médica, hay una clínica en el Valle la cual abre diariamente de 9 a.m. a 5 p.m.  Puedes checar el clima y las condiciones de los caminos en el número de información de NPS Yosemite al (209-372-0200).

Y mientras escribo esto, mi esposo ha entrado a la casa con leña para la chimenea.  Y me preguntó ¿sábes qu es lo que me gusta del clima de invierno? y me respondió… “la quietud… es muy silencioso afuera”  Así que disfruta de la quietud cuando vengas.  Toma tiempo para ver las marcas de animales en los caminos, escuchar a los coyotes o admirar el esplendor de las majestuosas montañas que rodean este pequeño pedazo de cielo.
