Birthday parties are big in my Mexican family. First birthday parties are especially important to us.
And why not?
The first year is full of milestones and, well, “firsts.” The first smile, the first tooth, the first word, every single one of them is so special and anticipated.
When I remember my oldest son’s 1st birthday party, my heart overflows. We invited family and friends and we probably had 40 guests. It was a beautiful day, sunny, but not too hot, and clear skies. The back yard was crowded with kids playing and laughing.
My son loved his cake! And it wasn’t just any cake. It was a big tres leches cake with fluffy white and blue whipped cream frosting. He didn’t know what to do with it at first, but as soon as he stuck his finger into the frosting and put it in his mouth, wow!, he knew right then he would love tres leches cake forever.
Beyond the cake, the food, and the presents, what struck me that day was seeing all the love poured into this child, my child, and how everybody stopped their daily activities and came to celebrate his life.
How many of us take first birthday parties for granted?
Did you know that every 20 seconds a child dies in the world from a disease that could have been prevented with a vaccine? Many of them before age five.
It breaks my heart.
But I can do something about it and I’m very happy to share this news with you!
This year I was invited to be part of Shot@Life’s Blogust. Our goal is to spread the word and participate in getting a donation of 30,000 vaccines for kids in need around the world.
And this is how you and I can help. It’s very easy. During August, every tweet, facebook share, and comment under this blog post will trigger a vaccine donation, just make sure to add the hashtag #Blogust to it. Share with your friends and family and let’s save lives together.
Why not leave a comment telling me about your favorite “firsts?”
Learn More about Blogust
Blogust is a month-long digital dialogue, bringing together many of the most beloved online writers, photo and video bloggers, and Shot@Life Champions to change the world through inspirational imagery and storytelling. This year marks the fifth year of Blogust helping kids around the world reach their fifth birthday thanks to the power of global vaccines.
The Blogust 2016 digital relay participants will be sharing the story behind #TBT baby photos or videos of themselves, their kid(s) or a side-by- side comparison at important milestones – from first steps or first smile to fifth birthday. Every parent everywhere should be able to experience these milestones, which is why every like, comment and social media share their posts receive (up to 30,000 throughout the month of August 2016) will trigger a donation by MAM to help provide a vaccine for a child in need around the world.
Start sharing! And thanks ahead of time.
