Laundry Packet Safety Tips

Thank you to the great folks at the American Cleaning Institute (ACI) for sponsoring this post about an important safety topic.

As this is National Poison Prevention Week, it’s the perfect time to share important safety tips to help protect our children from injury.

I know you already do everything you can think of to protect your kids, so I want to draw special attention to something I had not even considered laundry packet safety…

ACI National Poison Prevention Week

Did you know laundry packets can cause serious harm or injury? In 2013, there were over 10,000 laundry packet exposures* in children five and younger.

If you think about it, each single-load liquid laundry packet contains highly concentrated detergent. But you know how curious kids are, and how they like to chew on things. If children get their hands on liquid laundry packets, serious harm including accidental ingestion and eye exposure can occur.

That’s why we need to properly store them, just like any other household cleaner, out of reach and sight to avoid serious injury.

I use them all the time and I like them. So I’m glad to know I simply need to ensure no child has access to them which means always keeping them stored out of sight and out of reach and in the original container they came in.

Here’s a short, but important video, including laundry packet safety tips to help prevent accidents.

Remember these tips:

  • Store laundry packets and their containers out of reach and out of sight just like you do with other cleaning products.
  • Keep laundry packet containers closed and in a dry place.
  • Do not let children handle laundry packets. They are designed to dissolve quickly when they come in contact with water or saliva
  • Do not puncture or pull packets apart

One last thing: in recognition of National Poison Prevention Week, why not take a moment to program the emergency number for the American Association of Poison Control Centers right into your cell phone: 1.800.222.1222, then stick the number up on the fridge just for good measure.

Now doesn’t that feel better?
