Keeping Our Children Safe During The Holidays

Thank you to the great folks at the American Cleaning Institute® (ACI) for sponsoring this post about an important safety topic.

From Thanksgiving to Three Kings Day, our home is a steady stream of celebrations. This has always been the case in my family. In fact, my boys really love the holidays, because they know we could have as many as 14 parties between December 8th and January 6th, and we often do.

From the kids’ perspective, they are counting on our having as many as ten parties where piñatas are involved. Of course, this means tons of kids diving to the floor to snatch up brightly wrapped candies. If you’re wondering, my boys are counting on piñatas for nine days of posadas, plus a birthday thrown in for good measure.

You may think we’re crazy, but that’s the way we roll.

Of course, the practical side of all this means lots of folks, both adults and kids, moving through our home, not just for days, but for weeks. So I have to make an extra, concerted effort to keep things clean and organized, and, above all else, safe.

We don’t have a lot of babies around the house usually, but during the winter holidays we’re likely to have quite a few.

Which brings me to today’s safety tip: Over the past year, I’ve been teaming up with the American Cleaning Institute (ACI) on a critically important safety campaign called the Key Pledge. ACI recently conducted a study and found that 86% of caregivers are improperly storing their laundry packets.

Wow! Shocking, right? 86% of us! If you are not sure what I’m referring to, I’m talking about those convenient little single-load liquid laundry packets filled with highly concentrated laundry detergent.

The Key Pledge laundry safety campaign is an educational campaign launched by ACI and aimed at increasing awareness surrounding the proper usage, storage and handling of these single-load liquid laundry packets.

It’s vital to keep them away from children to help prevent the risk of serious injury from ingestion or exposure to the eyes.

Fortunately, I have cabinets up above my washer and dryer, so, as I’m rushing to squeeze my laundry in between parties during this busy holiday season, I’m glad to be reminded that I just need to slow down enough to remember to keep my laundry packets stored up high in the cabinets, out of reach of little hands, out of sight of inquisitive eyes, and in the package they came in, so I can avoid any unintended exposures to my younger guests.

Cuarto de lavado con ropa dobladaACI and I are asking all caregivers to take the Key Pledge at keypledge.com, and be the KEY to a safe laundry room and routine in your home this holiday season and beyond.

Here is the Key Pledge:

K – Keep single-load liquid laundry packets out of the reach and sight of children at all times

E – Educate your family and friends about the safe use and storage of these new laundry products. (Safety takes all of us.)

Y – You serve a key role in laundry safety

If you go to keypledge.com and take the pledge, you will be automatically entered for a chance to win a $2500 electronic gift card to makeover your laundry room from ACI.

Remember, we can help reduce injuries from unintended exposures to laundry packets.

Have a happy and safe holiday season!
