Back to School Organization Center

Last year it was all we could do to make it to the first day of school on time. We arrived at the last minute. Just finding two shoes for each kid was an achievement as we had just moved in and all our things were still packed in boxes.

But this year we are determined to be ready for that first day. We are starting by setting up a new organization center for keeping everything for school visible and handy.

In keeping with the submerged color palette we've been using for other recent projects around the house (see photo immediately below), we started by marking off a large rectangle on the wall in yellow to indicate exactly where our organizing would take place.

I wanted all the kids' school supplies to be easily visible and accessible this year. Last school year my kids asked me for paper to draw on and colored pencils to use, constantly. I kept them in a drawer in the desk, but it seems my kids would always forget where they were.

So we found this cool shelving system to install for the kids to store all their paper, pencils, pens, sharpeners, crayons, scissors, glue, tape, erasers, and school library books.

Plus we have special shelves for papers that need to be signed and returned to school and for homework returned home after being checked by their teachers.

In addition to the shelving, our organizing center includes two months worth of magnetic dry erase calendars for keeping track of both school and extra curricular activities, ….

Probably the thing I like best about this solution is that the shelves can be moved up and down if we discover we need to rearrange things as the school year goes on.

Life changes and we need to be able to adapt, right? So I like having the freedom to change the configuration of the shelves if we need them to better fit our needs. (This includes, of course, raising the shelves as the kids grow, too!)
