This post is part of the HEALTHY ESSENTIALS® 2014 program by Johnson & Johnson Consumer Companies, Inc. and The Motherhood, who sent me a box of products and compensated me for my time. Opinions, experiences and photos shared here are all my own, and I hope you enjoy them.
Little things make a difference.
Two very short stories. When I was in my twenties, I met a guy around New Year’s Eve and we had some chemistry. He was good looking and interesting. Work and other obligations kept us from seeing each other much, but we were definitely interested in each other. I was pleasantly surprised when he asked me out on a date for Valentine’s Day. Everything started out great, but each time we got too near each other, I was engulfed by a cloud of bad breath. Maybe if we’d known each other a little better, I could have said something, but we didn’t, and I didn’t, and that was pretty much that.
A long time after, I started dating a nice guy who was a dental student. He wasn’t as good looking as the other guy, but he had the cleanest mouth and freshest breath ever. It was a pleasure to be close. On some level, he must have known this, because he had a very engaging smile and was confident when we got close. Once we knew each other well enough for me to ask such a thing, I asked him how he did it. It’s probably no surprise. He brushed and flossed twice a day, and finished with a swish of Listerine. He also said he kept well hydrated. Apparently that’s supposed to help keep the stuff that causes bad breath from getting to concentrated, I don’t know for sure.
All of this is just to say, little things can make a difference. So take it from someone with personal experience, as you plan your romantic Valentine’s date, by all means set the mood, look your best, be thoughtful, but none of that amounts to a hill of beans if you forget to freshen your breath.
