Día del Niño / Children’s Day

ENGLISH VERSION BELOW

A quien corresponda (Sr. Presidente, Honorable Gobernador, Madame Congresista):

Sinceramente,

To Whom it May Concern (Mr. President,  Honorable Governor, Madam Congresswoman):

Year after year we enjoy many holidays here in the United States.  I love our cultural diversity, learning from each other, and creating our own identity.  We have patriotic celebrations, like 4th of July, Memorial Day, President's Day, and Veteran's Day.  We have many religious holidays as well. In addition, we celebrate ethnic holidays, like St Patrick's Day, Cinco de Mayo, and Mexican Independence Day (as you can see I'm mexican, viva México!! )  Further, we have celebrations for some of the folks in our lives like Father's Day and Mother's Day… but there is one very important day, a day celebrated in countries throughout the world that is strangely absent from our American calendar:  That day is Children's Day! (or Día del Niño as we know it in Spanish.)  What's that about???

Today, April 30th, “Día del Niño,” I would like to propose a fiesta for the little ones, the future of our country, the joys of our lives.  Today is Día del Niño in so many countries, I would love it if we had Día del Niño in the USA as well.

Today will be a special day for us.   We are going to play, run outside, go to the library and pick one,  two or ten books, and enjoy our time as a family.  Ok? … then ok? Maybe we will even have some ice cream.  Let's celebrate the kids among us!!  Don't you think we should start a campaign to establish Children's Day as a national day of play?

Sincerely,

Silvia Martinez
